Growing a sweet future

Tongaat Hulett, one of the country’s main sugar refiners, has been a primary supporter of the PROTEC Tongaat Branch since it started in 1991, and the company has played a pivotal role in the branch’s achievements through its CSI initiative, #GrowingASweetFuture.

This long-standing partnership exemplifies Tongaat Hulett’s commitment to a brighter future for our youth by creating opportunities for learners to attend PROTEC. Over the years, Tongaat Hulett has employed 33 engineering students who attended PROTEC TONGAAT. Other generous donors who support PROTEC Tongaat include the North Coast Courier, Victor Daitz Foundation, Allan Gray, MGA Trust, Altron, FFS Refiners, and Fulton Trust.
PROTEC Tongaat recruits up to 40 learners per grade, from grades 10 to 12, while a Grade 9 Intervention Programme, held during the July holidays and in Term 3, solidifies foundational skills in subjects such as Math and English, and equips Grade 9 learners with the tools to excel in Grade 10.

PROTEC Tongaat’s learner support includes Saturday School, Vacation School Workshops, Career Exposure, and ICT support with computer training and access to internet connectivity.

Through the partnership with Tongaat Hulett, PROTEC Tongaat is cultivating a ‘sweeter’ future for South Africa. Take a moment to enjoy this beautiful video story of the #StrongerTogether partnership between PROTEC Tongaat and Tongaat Hulett.
