From Balan’s desk

Dear Friends of PROTEC,
Welcome to our first PROTEC Connect of 2023.
The year started at full throttle for us and here we are, already racing to the end of the first quarter. We are continuing the celebration of our 40th anniversary into this year as we believe it is a momentous milestone, and we’re very proud of our organisation’s heritage. We invite you to continue celebrating with us.
Excellent matric results
One of the highlights at the start of 2023 was our Class of 2022 matric results. We had been a bit concerned as this cohort of learners had experienced difficult pandemic conditions throughout Grade 10 and 11, and for part of Grade 12. Even with our hybrid programme model, the realities of connectivity and access to devices were

problematic for many. However, the numbers speak for themselves and we are immensely proud of the hard-working matriculants, the facilitators, the branch staff, and the national office staff – everyone pulled out the stops to achieve great results. Have a look at our article and share the joy of knowing the bulk of these youngsters will have a much better chance of a successful STEM career as a result of their time with PROTEC.
Golf Day and Gala Dinner
We have revised our 40th anniversary Golf Day and Gala Dinner dates because of venue and VIP availability, and the date for both events is now set for Friday, 9 June. We start the day at Wanderers Golf Course, followed by the Gala Dinner at the Protea Hotel Wanderers, across the road from the club. We look forward to sharing this exciting occasion with you. More details follow below.
Connecting with alumni
We’re also on a mission to connect with our PROTEC alumni – you’re a very important part of our wider PROTEC family.
We’re embarking on a survey to build our alumni database and will be sending a short questionnaire to our alumni in the coming weeks. We would invite you to spend a few minutes responding to it. We will keep you posted.
Next Engineers
We also have a newsy update on our GE Next Engineers Programme, which is now in the second of five years, and is actively inspiring youngsters to set their sights on becoming successful engineers of the future.
Meet Leeron Slimmerts
We introduce you to Leeron Slimmerts, who joined PROTEC in 2018 as a bookkeeper, and was promoted to Finance and HR Manager in 2021. She is doing our organisation proud.
Please keep reading through to the end – find out more about our 2022 matriculants, consider our appeal, applaud our donors, and remember that all our stakeholders – our staff, learners, alumni, supporters, and our generous donors – are an important part of our PROTEC ecosystem.
Thank you to you all.
