PROTEC addresses critical scarce skills in South Africa. Very few disadvantaged scholars pass or even write matric Mathematics and Science, which are key gateway subjects, and they therefore don’t have the opportunity to pursue careers in engineering, science and technology. We have a proud history since 1982 of delivering measurable results in the field of STEM education:

  • Consistent excellent matric pass rate
  • About 75% of PROTEC learners pursue technical courses at tertiary level
  • More than 35 000 disadvantaged learners have successfully passed through the PROTEC programme and are now qualified Engineers, Doctors, Scientists, Educators and other professional people

Our alumni said it

I hold a BSc (Honours) degree in Physics – and PROTEC played a massive part in my success. During matric, I received help in Physics, Mathematics, English, and World of Work, and attended work experience seminars. One of them dealt with Astrophysics which piqued my interest. I received excellent tuition from PROTEC, which made it possible for me to get above-average marks, apply to universities and obtain bursaries. I would not be a Physicist today if it were not for PROTEC and Mr Clive Pillay, my Physics Tutor.
Akshay Durgapersadh
BSc in Physics (Honours)
PROTEC laid a formidable foundation for my studies, as they always emphasised that we should always be task-driven and not clock-driven. This meant that no matter what task I was given, I always completed it the best way possible. PROTEC also taught me time management skills, focus, planning and dedication – I would never have graduated with Cum Laude and a Dean’s Merit Award if it wasn’t for these skills.

B Technology (Mechanical Engineering): Cum Laude and Dean’s Merit Award
PROTEC became my first family, my academic support from 2015 when I joined the programme in Grade 11. PROTEC helped improve my grades from getting 50s to 80s in Physical Science and Maths, and my English. I also gained a clear view on different careers, which made it easy for me to know what I wanted to do and what I needed to get in order to get there.
